About Arthritis, Rheumatology and Bone Health
The Primary disease focus is rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis
and osteoporosis. Researchers also capitalize on scientific
opportunities that emerge from primary research focus, including the
development of novel therapies for tumor-induced hypercalcaemia and
fracture repair. Some research may also provide benefit in other
inflammatory conditions such as asthma, dermatitis and autoimmune
diseases.
Arthritis, Rheumatology and Bone Health Clinical Trials at Novartis
At Novartis, new medications are being developed to treat the
symptoms and the underlying causes of several of the main conditions
affecting bones and joints. Currently, Novartis is exploring a number
of novel compounds via arthritis and rheumatology clinical trials
that may apply to some of the following conditions listed below.
OsteoporosisOne in two women and one in eight men over 50
will have an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime.
Different approaches are available to increase the rate of new bone
formation and slowing the rate of its removal. Newer medications are
being investigated.
OsteoarthritisThis common degenerative joint disease is an
expression of 'wear-and-tear'. Thus athletes or overweight people
develop osteoarthritis in large joints (knees, shoulders, hips) due
to loss or damage of cartilage. When cartilage is lost, the bone next
to the joint is also eroded. New medications are being investigated.
Rheumatoid arthritisIn this chronic disease various joints in
the body are inflamed, leading to swelling, pain, stiffness, and
possibly loss of function. Continuous inflammation gradually erodes
the joint cartilage, narrows the joint space and eventually damages
bone. The inflammatory process not only affects the joints but can
also harm organs in other parts of the body.
